People who profit from the exploitation of forced labour are involved in human trafficking, a category of crime that also includes sex trafficking. There may be overlap with prostitution, but it becomes sex trafficking only if a third party is benefitting from the sale of illegal sex. Coercion, threats, isolation, and physical violence are all tactics used by traffickers to keep their victims quiet. Minnesota is known as one of the top locations in the U.S. for sex trafficking. In the Twin Cities alone, prosecutors found over 34,000 advertisements for sex posted online over a six-month period.
