Summary

In the US, 108 billion pounds of food are wasted each year. Meanwhile, 42 million people may face hunger. To draw attention to this issue, we took nutrition labels to places people walk by and ignore everyday. Malnutrition facts: In New York State, food makes up about 18% of all waste. Meanwhile, 1 in 6 children in the state face food insecurity. Enough food to feed 3 billion people is wasted globally every year. Yet, an estimated 925 million people are hungry. 3.9 million tons of food in NY ends up in the trash every year. Yet, 12.8% of New Yorkers struggle with food insecurity. The statistics are very shocking to me. The amount of food that we waste versus the amount of people who are hungry in New York City… it just doesn’t add up. Malnutrition facts: 5.4 pounds of edible food from every NYC household ends up here. That food could provide nutrition to the more than 466,000 kids facing food insecurity. In the US, 161 billion dollars worth of food is thrown out yearly. Meanwhile, 42 million people may face hunger. 3.9 million tons...that is absolutely crazy! Malnutrition facts: The average American household wastes 1,886 dollars of food per year. Meanwhile, more than 13 million American children live in food insecure homes. That is like more than 12% of New Yorkers as well, which is massive. It’s being mismanaged and it’s a wasteful mindset. We turned an old symbol of waste into a new source of knowledge. What have I been doing to help make sure that there is equity in the way that food is being distributed? It’s a wake-up call, it really is, truly. We believe good nutrition is a human right. And, like sunshine, must be available for all. Join us to help #ChangeTheFacts.
